‘White Lightning’ – Raglans

Caoimhe Ní Chathail – Music Mo Chairde

Following their success with ‘Digging Holes’, Raglans have released another of their infectious tracks ‘White Lightning’. The latest single from their self-titled debut album was released a month ago and comes after a whirlwind of a year for the Dublin band. Having achieved huge success in both Ireland and the UK, this single coincides with their support slot on The Fray’s European tour. The track itself sounds quite old-school in its repetitive and simple melody but remains reminiscent of Raglans’ style of cheery folk-rock with flawless vocals from lead singer Stephen Kelly. As always with Raglans, their instrumentation and backing vocals provide a retro folk feel to the song. The catchy guitar melodies and echoing vocals provide great opportunities for a bop and a bit of karaoke! Raglans have once again managed to create a contagious folk-rock track, insuring that ‘White Lightning’ is a song which you’ll be singing for days.

‘Something From Nothing’ – Foo Fighters

Glen Murphy – The Musical Adventure and Exploration Show

Good news everyone! Foo Fighters are back and with one almighty bang! The first track from their new album “Sonic Highways” out November 10th has been released and it’s the Foos at their best. “Something From Nothing” kicks off with the gentle guitar plucking and Dave Grohl’s distinctive voice in mono. In comes the bass drum of the awesomely talented Taylor Hawkins. This kicks the song off in to the first verse and is the driving force for the entire song. Boom! Here’s your chorus. The classic big rock band style of the Foos shines brightly here and reminds you how rock and roll should be played. The guitar solo accompanied with Grohl’s voice and Hawkins’ high energy and thrashy drum beat and fills just make you headbang involuntarily. A fantastically good first track leaving us with high levels of excitement and expectation for the rest of the album.

‘Every Other Freckle’ – Alt-J

Aodan Farrelly – ReDISCover

The ReDISCover track of the week comes from the new Alt-J album and it is the smash hit that is “Every Other Freckle”, complete with the enigmatic nonsenses lyrics that we have grown to love from the Leeds band such as “Gonna paw paw at you Like a cat paws at my woolen jumper”. Every Other Freckle seems to take the modern indie rock template and twist it into something entirely unique. The Synth line that comes near the end of the song (2:50) is bizarrely enticing and has you singing along with the rest of the lyrics. I think it’s a great track in an otherwise poor year for Indie Rock.
