2.Climate Change Conference
Government and business leaders have announced that they will pledge billions of euros toward the cause of sustainable energy technology.
The initiative is being launched by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande. At least 19 governments and around 28 global business leaders have pledged their support.
The meetings in Paris have been labelled as “high stakes” by environmentalists. It is believed that this may be the last time true change is possible.

3.Minister For Justice Launches Strategy For Repeat Offenders
Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald is launching a new scheme today targeting repeat offenders.
This comes following figures that show repeat offenders are responsible for most crimes and a quarter of offenders responsible for 75% of property crime.
The strategy has been piloted in three areas and will see the the identification of such offenders by Gardaí and the prison and probation services and discouraging them from committing further crimes.

4. Japenese Whaling
The Japanese Whaling fleet is preparing itself to set sail on Tuesday. The expedition will be the first since the International Court of Justice announced that the Whale hunts were not truly scientific.
The International Whaling Commission set a commercial ban on Japanese whaling in 1986, however the Japanese continued to hunt under the pretext of “scientific research”.
Australian officials, which brought the case against the Japanese to the International Court of Justice, said that they would be sending a customs and border patrol boat out to follow the Japanese fleet to report on their activities.

5.Smuggled Cigarettes
A massive haul of smuggled cigarettes has been discovered hidden in a consignment of hot tubs.
Customs officers made the seizure after inspecting a truck that had arrived in Rosslare port from Cherbourg in France on Saturday night.
The lorry was registered in Lithuania.
