1. Gardai respond to gangland violence

An Gardaí Síochána are considering lines of enquiry other than gangland violence following two fatal shootings in the last week.

Commissioner O’Sullivan said this week that the force are attempting to keep an open mind while investigating these crimes.

Armed Gardaí are to continue patrolling the city centre following the murders of Alan Byrne and Eddie Hutch Snr.
Residents in Poplar Row and Drumcondra have suggested that Gardaí should be fully armed.

2.UL Expenses

The Higher Education Authority has expressed concern over a culture of inappropriate expense claims made by University of Limerick staff.

An independent report was published yesterday which confirmed some staff had filled irregular claims including mileage payments between home and college.

The review was prompted by three members of the college finance department who raised concerns over expenses of colleagues. The report found all inappropriate claims were challenged and eventually denied.

3. Syria

At least 500 people have been killed in Aleppo province in Syria since the Syrian army and allied forces began an offensive attack less than ten days ago.

The war monitor The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, has reported the figure includes at least 100 civilians.

The Syrian army, supported by Russian air strikes, began an attempt to retake Aleppo province and the surrounding areas in early February.

4. 999 call centre strke

Strike action has been announced at 999 call centres around Ireland because of a dispute over working conditions and management structures.

The 12 hour work stoppage will come in the coming weeks and will certainly come before the election.

Members of the Communication Worker’s Union voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action, with staff alleging that they are being treated like school children.

5.Indian Soldier

An Indian Soldier who was only rescued an entire six days after he was buried by a deadly avalanche on the world’s highest battleground, is being treated in Delhi hospital.

The army have reported that the soldier is in an extremely critical condition following the accident.

The soldier had become trapped after a massive block of ice fell onto his army post 5,900 metres high in the Himalayas, killing nine of his colleagues.
