Your Afternoon Headlines – 07/03/2016

Good afternoon. Here are the headlines past midday.

1. Luas Strikes

There has been some progress in the Luas industrial dispute as drivers have reduced their pay claim.

Speaking on his way to talks at the Workplace Relations Commission Richard McCarthy of Siptu confirmed the reduction of their pay claim .

However, Gerry Madden of Transdev Ireland has said that even if the union reduced its claim making progress on the matter could be difficult.

2. Suspicious Object in Northern Ireland

According to police in Northern Ireland a suspicious object has been found near a school in Belfast.

The PSNI have said that a security alert is in place in the Dunmurray area after the object was discovered in Lagmore Drive.

The alert comes after a bomb exploded in east Belfast last Friday which left a 52 year old prison officer wounded.

3. Car Crash

A woman, in her 30s, has died following a single-vehicle accident at the Applegreen service station at Coolanoran between Newcastle West and Rathkeale at about 11.30pm last night.

A male passenger and two children – who were in the back seat of the car – were all taken to University Hospital Limerick with non-life-threatening injuries.

Her body has been removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination will take place.

4. Fisherman at Hospital

A fisherman has been airlifted to hospital after falling ill on board a fishing trawler off the Clare coast this morning.

The alarm was raised at around 9.45am when the Irish Coast Guard was alerted. The Sligo rescue crew reached the vessel at around 10.50am and spent almost 80 minutes on scene before the casualty was winched from the deck.

The man is understood to have been complaining of abdominal problems and was flown to University Hospital Galway for treatment.

5. Body Found

Five people have been arrested following the discovery of a man’s body in a stream in Portadown this morning.

The body was discovered just after 11am in the Mourneview street/Thomas Street area.

A 30 year old man, two men aged 28 and a 17 year old girl were arrested as part of the investigation.
